Packing When the Weight Matters...

Doesn't weight always matter? Anyway, we are allowed two bags for domestic travel, but the inter island travel is 1 - 44lbs. checked bag and 1- 6 lbs. carry on. So the domestic portion is out the window. I have been advised to buy a couple of bottles of liquor at duty free at LAX. Well I guess that's what we will do. I pre-ordered the minibar for mixers, but a bottle of Grey Goose was around $190 US and I'm sure it's not that gigantic size! I will try not to focus on how expensive everything is there. The saying goes, if you are worried about the price of drinks, you are probably going to the wrong place. I have been coming to terms with this for months.
So we will arrive with our baggage and liquor from Duty Free (which is not counted as weight...odd) and it may feel like arriving in Destin.
I have gone to great measures to pack as light as possible and I weigh everything. We went to Europe for three weeks twice with each one medium bag. So I got this. However, I didn't have to pack a noodle to go to Europe! We are staying at two very nice resorts, but it is very remote, so no Target to pick up a flotation device and I am not going all that way to wish I had brought something to float on. So far I have decided to bring two different size floats, one to lay on and one to sit on ( both those spring mesh floats that fold up and two mesh noodles and I think these will make snorkeling off of the bungalow easier. We actually tested floats and I returned two! We tested out our scuba gear too, but that's another story!
I use the Eagle Creek packing envelopes to pack and I have Lipault Luggage, super lightweight. I always lay out what I want to bring and then start putting back. Sometimes I overpack, but not as much as I used to.
So the things that are going in the suitcase are floats, noodles, underwater camera, good camera, binoculars, a small flashlight, waterproof speaker for ipod/phone, a collapsible cooler, two tervis tumblers (to keep our drinks cold), lots of sunscreen, hats, swimsuits (each four) and coverups (4), sundresses (4), flip flops (my crocs of course), water shoes because there is sharp reef and let me tell you I scoured the internet looking for cute ones...there is no such thing as cute water shoes and that's the ones that aren't black!!yuck! Well, I got grey and they make me look like I'm standing in mud...shorter than normal!, but anyway I digress, snorkel gear (the resort provides this but it really creeps me out to think of whose mouth has sucked on those! Best to have a fresh start,we will use their fins), and of course every possible toiletry I can fit in the suitcase. Some of these things will be in our carry-on, electronics, meds, a set of clothes (in case our luggage doesn't follow us). I packed a few snacks, cereal bars, nuts, but limited it to only 1 pound. lol. I brought tons of ziplocs, because you just never know and they work great in a beach bag that may get wet. I have tons of meds to prevent illness, most important GI stuff! We have had a ruined vacation due to food poisoning. Horrible!
I don't normally pack snacks and sunscreen and just kind of get whatever I need wherever we go. However, some of these thing are just not available. So I am bringing what I like and normally use.
I have worked off of a ton of lists, notes to self and TripAdvisor recommendations. I research this stuff as a hobby. I am always intrigued by the number of things I never even think about... bug spray, yes they have mosquitoes! Portable fan, no AC in Tahiti airport and lines start lining up 3 hrs prior to flight, float strap for underwater camera, string to tie raft to bungalow so we don't float into oblivion! This was particularly amusing, David came home and I had 40 ft of rope attached to a float and didn't know what to wrap it on to keep it from tangling, you know like a kite thing? Well I rolled it up on a tampon cardboard case, problem solved. Most of these things will be left there for the next guest to use freeing up space for anything I need (or want) to bring back! And lastly, a little candle that smells tropical and fish food.
I ordered French Pacific francs and got US cash. We are ready to go!
Before packing...

No, Jackson didn't make it into the Suitcase! Did manage to put everything into the two bags...weighing in at 39 lbs. each, I'm so proud!

Travel day tomorrow...and the next day!
